Mutesa I

Japanese: ムテサ[1世](英語表記)Mutesa I
Mutesa I
?-1884
King of the Buganda Kingdom, located in what is now central Uganda in East Africa. Reigned from 1856 to 1884. During his reign, trade with the Indian Ocean coast flourished, and European explorers and Christian missionaries began to visit the kingdom. He also showed an interest in Christianity, and tried to win over Europeans to his side in order to prevent Egypt, whose power was expanding in the north at the time, from moving south. The state of the royal court at that time was conveyed to Europe by Stanley and others who met him. [Masao Yoshida]
