A tropical woody plant belonging to the Dicapetalaceae family, sometimes slightly creeping (illustration). Many species have inflorescences that grow fused to the leaves. Some African species of this genus are poisonous. D. toxicarium Engler and several other species are said to be poisonous, but the leaves are particularly poisonous, and the fruits are not so poisonous; the flesh is the edible part. D. timoriense Engler, found in Java, is a creeping woody plant whose bark is used for fiber, young leaves are boiled and eaten, and the fruits are used in cooking with fish.
