Also known as Himekamiyama, this 1,125m mountain is located in Tamayama Village, Iwate County, Iwate Prefecture, in the northern part of the Kitakami Highlands. The entire mountain is a pyramidal shaped mountain made of Mesozoic granite, which is exposed near the summit. It is surrounded by a wide open plateau at an altitude of 350-900m, but Himekamidake is a remnant hill left behind from these plateau surfaces. Legend has it that Sakanoue no Tamuramaro enshrined a guardian deity on the summit and ruled over this region. Also known as Tamatozan, it was the center of mountain worship as one of the three sacred mountains in the south, along with Mt. Iwate and Mt. Hayachine.
