Shishkin, Ivan Ivanovich

Born: January 25, 1832 in Elabuga
[Died] March 20, 1898. St. Petersburg Russian landscape painter. He studied at the Moscow Art School and the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1861 went to study in Munich, Germany. He studied in Zurich, Switzerland in 1863, and in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1864. After returning to Russia, he worked as a member of the Itinerant Artists. He loved the forests and woodland landscapes of northern Russia, and depicted nature with precise techniques. His major works include "A Field in the Rye" (1878) and "Morning in a Pine Forest" (1889), both of which are housed in the Tretyakov Gallery. (→ Russian Art)
