Shaku - Shaku

Japanese: 尺 - しゃく
Shaku - Shaku
[1] 〘 noun 〙① A unit of length in the shaku-kan system. Approximately 30.3 centimeters. Ten times the size of a sun. One-tenth of a length. The shaku in the ritsuryo system were defined as dai shaku, a geodetic shaku, and sho shaku, a common shaku. Dai shaku was also called komajaku , and was 1.2 times the length of sho shaku. In the 6th year of the Wadō era ( 713 ), the measurement system was revised and sho shaku in the ritsuryo system was defined as dai shaku. The dai shaku in the Wadō system (sho shaku in the ritsuryo system) was later slightly longer and called kanejaku (kanejaku or kyokujaku) , and although it underwent several revisions during the Edo period, the length remained largely unchanged until the Meiji period. When the Meiji government adopted the metric system, it defined 3 shaku 3 sun (kanejaku) as 1 meter. The dai shaku in the Wadō system (sho shaku in the ritsuryo system) in the Nara period was slightly shorter than this kanejaku, at just under 9 sun 8 bu. In addition, a whale scale (kujirajaku/geijaku) is equivalent to one shaku 2.5 sun of a curved scale.
