…He studied at Uppsala University, and his early plays, such as At Rome (1870), The Man Without Peace (1871), and The Master Wolov (1872), were well-received. In 1877, he married Siri von Essen, the wife of a military aristocrat. His novel The Red Room (1879) made him a literary star. However, his characteristically sharp satire led him to live as a fugitive in Switzerland and France from 1883 to 1889. However, this was a fulfilling period for him as a writer, and he wrote the autobiographical novel The Maid's Boy (1886-87, 1909), the naturalistic plays The Father (1887), Miss Julie (1888), and The Debtor (1890). …
