Hiburi Island

An island in the Uwa Sea in western Ehime Prefecture. It belongs to Uwajima City and is 22 km west of the city. Its area is 4.01 square kilometers. It was the base of Fujiwara Sumitomo, the pirate leader of the Johei-Tengyo Rebellion (935-940). The stone walls of a former fortress remain on the island's summit, and there is a monument marking the site of Fujiwara Sumitomo's residence. During the Edo period, it was a place of exile for the Uwajima Domain. Avoiding the northwesterly seasonal winds, the fishing villages of Noto, Ako, and Kiro line the bay on the east side from north to north. It is part of Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park, and is popular with beachgoers in the summer. Rock fishing for sea bream and black porgy is also popular. There is a regular ferry service from Uwajima Port. Population: 442 (2009).

愛媛県西部、宇和海にある島。宇和島市に属し、市街地の西22キロメートルにある。面積4.01平方キロメートル。承平(じょうへい)・天慶(てんぎょう)の乱（935～940）の海賊首領藤原純友(すみとも)の本拠地であった。島の山頂に城砦(じょうさい)跡の石垣が残っており、「藤原純友籠居の跡(ふじわらのすみともろうきょのあと)」の記念碑がある。江戸時代には宇和島藩の流刑地であった。北西の季節風を避け、東側の湾頭に北から能登(のと)、明海(あこ)、喜路(きろ)の漁業集落が並ぶ。足摺(あしずり)宇和海国立公園の一部で、夏季は海水浴客が多い。タイやグレなどの磯釣りも盛ん。宇和島港からの定期船便がある。人口442（2009）。
