James-Lange theory

This is a classical theory on the experience and expression of emotions, proposed separately by W. James and CG Lange at roughly the same time. It is also called the peripheral theory. It states that the perception of an emotional event first produces activity, or expression, in peripheral effectors, and then the sensations emanating from these are sent back to the brain, producing an emotional experience. Therefore, it is not that we cry because we are sad, but rather that we feel sad because we cry.

情動の体験と表出に関する古典的学説で W.ジェームズと C.G.ランゲがほぼ同時期に別個に提唱した。末梢説ともいう。情的事象の知覚によってまず末梢の諸効果器に活動すなわち表出が生じ，次いでそれらに発する諸感覚が脳へ送り返されて情動体験を生じるとする。したがって，悲しいから泣くのではなく，泣くから悲しいということになる。
