A rabbit-sized rodent (illustration) with a stocky, rounded body and long, slim legs. A general term for mammals in the genus Dasyprocta of the Pacasidae family, of which about 10 species are known. Body color ranges from reddish brown to dark brown. Body length is about 50 cm. The tail is short, about 2 cm, and almost invisible as it is hidden by the fur. Weight is about 3 kg. It has four toes on its front feet and three on its hind feet, and the claws on its hind feet are particularly well developed like hooves, making it well suited to running. It is found in Brazil, Venezuela, and other places, and lives in a variety of environments, from humid dense forests to dry grasslands.

背中の丸い，ずんぐりした体に，細長いスマートな四肢をもつウサギ大の齧歯（げつし）類（イラスト）。パカ科アグーチ属Dasyproctaに属する哺乳類の総称で，約10種が知られる。体色は赤褐色から暗褐色。体長50cm前後。尾は2cm程度と短く，毛に隠れてほとんど見えない。体重3kg前後。前足に4本，後足に3本の指があり，後足のつめはひづめ状にとくによく発達して，走行に適したつくりになっている。ブラジル，ベネズエラなどに分布し，低湿場の密林から乾燥した草原まで，さまざまな環境にすむ。
