The geological formation of Sri Lanka is ancient, and it has many things in common with southern India. The northern part of the island is flat, but it becomes mountainous as you move south, with the highest peak, Pidurutalagala, at 2,524m. The central mountain range, which can be seen as the end of the Western Ghats, has a major influence on the climate of Sri Lanka.
