It is also written in Chinese characters as 滸, 尾籠, and so on. In the past, it was also called オコ or ウコ. Simply put, it means stupid or foolish, but it is a multi-sense word that also refers to actions that try to make people laugh or actions that are out of the ordinary, and it is an extremely important word when exploring the clownish spirit in Japan. The origin of the word is said to be the same as okaし, but it is unclear. An old example is in the Kojiki and Nihon shoki Kayo, which say, "My heart is so irritated that I am now pitiful." In the entry for July 29, 880, in the Sandai Jitsuroku, it says, "Ukonoe Naritomitsugu and Nagao Yonetsugu are good at performing arts and sangaku, and make people laugh. They are similar to the so-called o人." This shows that people who performed sangaku were considered idiots. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
