French physiologist. Born in Paris. Graduated from the University of Paris in 1877, he became professor of physiology at the university in 1887. He attempted research into the physiology of nerves, respiration, muscles, liver function, and serum therapy. In 1888, he confirmed that injecting bacteria produces an immune system, and in 1890, he performed serum therapy for the first time. In 1913, he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research into the phenomenon of hypersensitivity.
