Ichimura Sanjiro

A scholar of Oriental history. He was born in Hojo Village, Hitachi Province (Hojo, Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture). His pen name was Kido, his pen name was Keikyo, and he was also called Tsukuba-sanjin. After graduating from the Department of Classics and Chinese Studies at the Imperial University in 1887 (Meiji 20), he served as a professor at Gakushuin and Tokyo Imperial University. After retiring from the university in 1925 (Taisho 14), he lectured on Oriental history for a long time at Kokugakuin University, Waseda University, and other universities. Along with Shiratori Kurakichi, he pioneered Oriental history in Japan, but while Shiratori specialized in Western Region history applying modern German-style historiography, Ichimura, who started out in Chinese studies, excelled in research on Chinese politics and ideology, and was also good at general overviews. He wrote many books, including "East Asian History," "China Theory," and "Toyo Shi Tou."

東洋史学者。常陸(ひたち)国北条(ほうじょう)村（茨城県つくば市北条）の出身。号は器堂(きどう)、字(あざな)は圭郷(けいきょう)、また筑波山人と称した。1887年（明治20）帝国大学古典科漢学課を卒業後、学習院教授、東京帝国大学教授を歴任。1925年（大正14）定年退官後は国学院大学、早稲田(わせだ)大学などで長く東洋史学を講じた。白鳥庫吉(くらきち)と並んで日本の東洋史学を開拓したが、白鳥がドイツ流の近代史学を応用した西域史を得意としたのに対して、漢学から出発した市村は、中国の政治、思想面の研究に優れ、また概説を得意とした。『東洋史要』『支那(しな)論集』『東洋史統』ほか多くの著作がある。
