The moment when the upper edge of the sun appears on the horizon is called sunrise, and the moment when it disappears is called sunset. Ephemeris tables show the moment when the sun reaches an altitude of -54.2', taking into account that the sun has a visible radius of 16', that when it is on the horizon it appears to rise about 34' due to atmospheric refraction, and the height of ships and bridges during maritime activities. The higher the altitude, the earlier the sunrise and the later the sunset. The direction of sunrise and sunset is a function of latitude and season. Generally, on the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, the sun rises due east and sets due west, and during this period it is north in the summer and south in the winter.

太陽の上縁が水平線に現れる瞬時を日の出といい，隠れる瞬時を日の入りという。天体位置表では，太陽が16′の視半径をもつこと，水平線にあるとき大気の屈折をうけて約34′浮き上がって見えること，海洋活動における船橋の高さなどを考慮して，太陽の地心高度が－54.2′に達する瞬時を表掲している。より高いところでの日の出は早く，日の入りは遅くなる。日の出･日の入りの方位は緯度と季節の関数である。一般に，春分，秋分の日に真東から出て真西に沈み，この間は夏季は北寄り，冬季は南寄りとなる。
