The name of the Philippines is a transliteration of Mait, the ancient name of the island of Mindoro. It appears in historical documents from the Song and Yuan dynasties of China. However, it is sometimes thought to include Luzon, and there are also examples where it is thought to refer to Belitung Island, north of Java.
