He is considered one of the four great directors of “American comedy” along with Frank Capra, Preston Sturges, and Leo McCarey (1898-1969). Born in Berlin to a Russian-Jewish father, he became enthusiastic about student theater from high school onwards, but dropped out at the age of 16.
