Hinokumakunikakasu Shrine

Japanese: 日前国懸神宮 - ひのくまくにかかすじんぐう

A shrine in Akizuki, Wakayama City. Formerly a government-sponsored grand shrine. Within the same grounds, Hizen Shrine and Kunikake Shrine stand side by side, each worshiping Hizen Okami and Kunikake Okami as their chief deities. Although technically separate, they are related in terms of their history and the deities they worship. Emperor Jimmu ordered Kii Kuni no Miyatsuko Daidone no Mikoto to deify the shrine, and in the 51st year of the reign of Emperor Sujin, it was enshrined at Namakusahama no Miya ( Kemi, Wakayama City), and in the 16th year of the reign of Emperor Suinin, it was moved to its current location. It is said to enshrine the Higata Kagami ( sun mirror) and Hihoko (sun spear), which are said to have been made when Amaterasu Omikami hid herself in the Ama-no-Iwato (Cave of Heaven). Since ancient times, its divinity has been said to be second only to Ise Jingu. Kii Province's Ichinomiya (first shrine). Nichizengu. Nichizenkokkengu. Hinokuma Jingu.

和歌山市秋月にある神社。旧官幣大社。同境内に日前神宮と国懸神宮が並立し、それぞれ日前大神、国懸大神を主神としてまつる。名分上は別個だが、由緒・祭神は一体の関係にある。神武天皇が紀伊国造大道根命に命じて奉祀、崇神天皇五一年に名草浜の宮（和歌山市毛見）にまつられ、垂仁天皇一六年に現在地に遷座。天照大神(あまてらすおおみかみ)が天岩戸にかくれた時に作られたとする日像(ひがた)鏡と日矛(ひほこ)をまつると伝えられる。古来その神性は伊勢神宮につぐとされる。紀伊国一の宮。にちぜんぐう。にちぜんこっけんぐう。ひのくまじんぐう。
