…First, in the Age of Discovery and Conquest, the diaries, records, reports, chronicles, and letters of the conquistadors and clergy who participated in them formed the history of literature. The main works include the handwritten version of the Voyages of Columbus by Las Casas, Hernán Cortés' Five Reports (1519-26), Las Casas' Concise Account of the Destruction of the Indies (1552), and Bernal Díaz del Castillo's (1495/96-1584) Historia de la Conquest de la New Spain (1552). Other notable works include Ercilla y Zúñiga's La Araucana (1569-89), the first epic poem in Latin American literature, and the Popol Vuh (1550), a Maya-K'iche' mythology. …
