Katsumitsu Hino

Japanese:
Katsumitsu Hino

A nobleman in the mid-Muromachi period. Son of Hino Shigemasa (later renamed Masamitsu). In 1434 (Eikyō 6), he succeeded his grandfather Yoshisuke after his death. In 1455 (Kōshō 1), he became Gon Dainagon (provisional chief councilor), and in the same year, his younger sister Tomiko became the wife of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, which led to him strengthening his power. In 1465 (Kanshō 6), he was promoted to Juichii (Juichii) and the following year, in 1466 (Bunshō 1), he became Regent of the In (inner monastery). He intervened in the shogunate by suppressing Shogun Yoshimasa, plotting to make Tomiko's son Yoshihisa the head of the shogun family, and together with Ise Sadachika, he expelled Yoshimi, who had already been selected as the successor, which led to the Onin War (1467-1477). In 1467 (Onin 1), he became the first man in his family to hold the position of Minister of the Interior, and was called "Oshidaijin" (Minister of the Interior), wielding exclusive power. In 1473 (Bunmei 5), when Yoshihisa became Shogun, he took charge of the shogunate as the new Shogun representative. In 1476, he became Minister of the Left, reaching the pinnacle of official rank, but died on June 15 of the same year at the age of 48. Jinson of Daijoin Temple at Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara wrote that this was "a rare divine punishment." He was called Yuishoin.
