A former town in Shima District, eastern Mie Prefecture. It occupies the Sakishima Peninsula at the southern tip of the Shima Peninsula, and faces Ago Bay to the north. Pearl farming in the bay, as well as fishing for abalone and spiny lobster, are thriving, and Wagu, located in the center, is famous as a town for female divers. It belongs to Ise-Shima National Park, and Oshima Island to the south is rich in tropical plants such as sea lilies. In October 2004, it merged with Hamajima Town, Daio Town, Ago Town, and Isobe Town in Shima District to form Shima City. 17.01 km2 . 三重県東部,志摩郡の旧町。志摩半島南端の先志摩半島を占め,北は英虞(あご)湾に臨む。湾内の真珠養殖をはじめ,アワビ,イセエビなどの漁業が盛んで,中心の和具(わぐ)は海女(あま)の町として有名。伊勢志摩国立公園に属し,南方の大島はハマユウなど暖地性植物が豊富。2004年10月志摩郡浜島町,大王町,阿児町,磯部町と合併し,志摩市となる。17.01km2。1万4818人(2003)。
