...Population: 45,610 (1995). The main settlements within the city are Atami, Izuyama, Izumi (Izu Yugahara), Taga, and Ajiro, and Ajiro flourished in the early modern period as a shipping port for Izu products and as an important port for shipping from Osaka to Edo. The city faces the Sagami Bay to the east, and is surrounded by mountains that form the crater walls of the former Taga (Atami) volcano from north to south, with the current city center located near what is thought to be the former crater.
