Jomyoji Temple
A temple of the Kenchoji school of the Rinzai sect in Kamakura city. The principal image is Shaka Nyorai. It is one of the Five Mountains of Kamakura. Its predecessor was Gokurakuji, which was founded in 1188 by Ashikaga Yoshikane and Taiko Gyoyu as its founder. A portion of Ashikaga Yoshiakira's remains was stored in Komyoin, known as the founder's tower, and the temple is visited by the Kamakura kubo every year as the ancestral shrine of the Ashikaga clan. The wooden seated statue of Zen master Taiko is an important cultural property, and the temple grounds are a nationally designated historic site.

鎌倉市にある臨済宗建長寺派の寺。本尊釈迦如来。鎌倉五山の一つ。1188年足利義兼(よしかね)が退耕行勇(たいこうぎょうゆう)を開山として創建した極楽寺が前身。開山塔といわれる光明(こうみょう)院に足利義詮(よしあきら)の遺骨が分骨され,毎年,足利氏祖廟として鎌倉公方(かまくらくぼう)の参詣を受けた。木造退耕禅師座像は重要文化財,境内は国指定史跡。
