A town in Nishiusuki County in northern Miyazaki Prefecture. It occupies the midstream of the Gokase River, and is mostly covered by forests that produce a lot of timber and shiitake mushrooms. The area around Mt. Katamuki at the northern end is part of the Sobokatamuki Quasi-National Park. Area: 277.67 km2 . Population: 4,463 (2010).
