Morizo ​​Ishidate

Pharmacist. Born into a family of pharmacists in Aomori City. Graduated from Tokyo Imperial University. Studied under Asahina Yasuhiko. Received a PhD in Pharmacy for his biochemical research on camphor. Studied biochemistry under R. Kuhn at the University of Heidelberg, and also trained in organic microanalysis under Friedrich Feigl (1891-1971) in Vienna and Hejlowski in the Czech Republic. Became professor at Tokyo Imperial University in 1941 (Showa 16). Founded a course in pharmaceutical analytical chemistry. In 1944, he received the Imperial Academy Prize for his research on "the transformation of camphor in the body and the true nature of its cardiotonic effect." His research history includes the creation of nitrogen mustard-N-oxide as a chemotherapy for cancer, and the production of glucuronic acid and its clinical application. Became professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo in 1961. He has served as director of the National Institute of Hygienic Sciences (now the National Institute of Health Sciences), chairman of the Central Pharmaceutical Affairs Council, president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, president of the Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences, president of the Society of Analytical Chemistry, and president of the Japanese Cancer Society. He is an honorary doctorate from the University of Paris and an honorary member of the pharmaceutical societies of Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. His publications include "Qualitative Analysis of Microamounts" and "Living Environment and Carcinogenesis."

薬学者。青森市の薬業家に生まれる。東京帝国大学卒業。朝比奈泰彦(あさひなやすひこ)に師事。樟脳(しょうのう)の生化学的研究により薬学博士。ハイデルベルク大学のR・クーンに生化学を学び、またウィーンのフィグルFriedrich Feigl（1891―1971）、チェコのヘイロウスキーのもとで有機微量分析を研修した。1941年（昭和16）東京帝国大学教授。薬品分析化学講座を創設。1944年「樟脳の体内変化と強心作用の本態の研究」により帝国学士院賞を受けた。研究歴は、癌(がん)の化学療法としてナイトロジェンマスタード‐N‐オキサイドの創製、グルクロン酸の製造とその臨床応用などである。1961年東京大学名誉教授。国立衛生試験所（現、国立医薬品食品衛生研究所）所長、中央薬事審議会長、日本薬学会頭、日本薬剤師会長、分析化学会長、癌学会長を歴任。パリ大学名誉博士。日本、アメリカ、イギリス、フランス各薬学会名誉会員。著書に『微量定性分析』『生活環境と発がん』などがある。
