Vasiliy Vladimirovich Bartol'd

A Russian scholar of Central Asian history and Turkish history. Professor of Islamic Studies at St. Petersburg University, member of the Russian and Soviet Academy of Sciences. Well versed in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish, he was involved in field surveys such as the excavation at Samarkand. He was one of the pioneers of empirical research using Islamic historical materials, and his representative work, Turkestan until the Mongol Invasion (1898-1900), is a monumental masterpiece in this field that has not lost its value even today. His many other works include Four Essays on the History of Central Asia, A History of the Turkish Peoples of Central Asia, Muslim Culture, and The History of Oriental Studies in Europe and Russia.

ロシアの中央アジア史・トルコ民族史学者。ペテルブルグ大学イスラム学教授、ロシアおよびソ連邦科学アカデミー会員。アラビア語、ペルシア語、トルコ語などに精通し、サマルカンドの発掘などの現地調査にも従事した。イスラム史料を駆使した実証的研究に先鞭(せんべん)をつけた1人で、代表作の『モンゴル侵入時代までのトルキスタン』（1898～1900）は、この分野における記念碑的名著で、現在でもその価値は失われていない。ほかに『中央アジア史に関する四つの論考』『中央アジアのトルコ民族史』『ムスリム文化』『ヨーロッパおよびロシアにおける東洋学の歴史』などの多数の業績がある。
