Japanese: コククジラ(克鯨) - コククジラ（英語表記）gray whale

A mammal of the family Mysticetiidae. A whale that lives in the coastal areas of the North Pacific Ocean and retains primitive features in its skull. It once inhabited the North Atlantic Ocean, but became extinct in the early 18th century. There are two populations in the North Pacific Ocean. One is a lineage that migrates from the coast of Hainan Island to the northern Sea of Okhotsk, passing through the coast of the Korean Peninsula. Its breeding grounds have not been identified, but it is thought to be somewhere in the South China Sea. Some of these whales are also found off the coast of Kitakyushu. The other is a lineage that travels between the California Peninsula, the coast of mainland Mexico, the northern Bering Sea, and the Chukwon Sea.

ヒゲクジラ亜目コククジラ科の哺乳類。北太平洋の沿岸域にすみ，頭骨に原始的な特徴をとどめたクジラ。かつては北大西洋にも生息したが，18世紀初めに絶滅した。北太平洋には二つの系統群がある。一つは，海南島近海から朝鮮半島沿岸を経てオホーツク海北部の間を回遊する系統で，繁殖場は明らかにされていないが，南シナ海のどこかにあるものと思われる。この一部は北九州沿岸にも出現する。他はカリフォルニア半島，メキシコ本土沿岸部とベーリング海北部，チュコート海とを往復する系統である。
