A town in Gamo County in the southeastern part of Shiga Prefecture. The main settlement, located in the lowlands upstream of the Hino River, was a castle town for the Gamo clan during the Tenbun era, and flourished as the birthplace of Omi merchants who peddled lacquerware, medicines, and kimono clothing from the Edo period onwards. Even today, the town is engaged in commerce and industry, primarily in pharmaceuticals. The Omi Railway runs through the town. 117.60 km2 .
