Born: November 25, 1878 in Magdeburg
[Died] June 4, 1945. Ascona. A representative playwright of German Expressionism. He started out by writing satirical comedies, but in 1917, he attracted attention with the performance of his historical play The Burghers of Calais. He then wrote a series of socially themed works, From Morning to Midnight (published in 1916, premiered in 17), Coral (17), and its sequels Gas, Part I (18) and Gas, Part II (20), in the "Gas Trilogy," which depicted human beings crushed by the mechanisms of modern society. His works are characterized by the way he strips away the individual attributes of his characters, stereotypes them, and uses techniques such as monologues. He fled to Switzerland in 1938 due to Nazi oppression.
