Danube in English. The second largest river in Europe after the Volga. It originates in the eastern foot of the Black Forest in southwestern Germany, flows eastward, passes through Vienna, Budapest, and Belgrade, and empties into the Black Sea, forming the border between Romania and Bulgaria. It is about 2,850 km long. Its drainage area is about 820,000 km2 . It has about 300 tributaries. There is little seasonal change in the flow rate, and the gradient downstream from Vienna is very small. The Iron Gate, which lies on the border between the Transylvanian Alps and the Balkan Mountains, and the large delta at the mouth of the river are obstacles to navigation, but it plays an important role as an artery for Eastern European countries. Large ships can travel to Regensburg in Germany, and small ships to Ulm. It is also connected to the Rhine via the Main River via the Ludwig Canal. Since the early 17th century, many agreements have been made between countries regarding navigation rights, but in 1856 the Treaty of Paris decided on international management of the Danube and established the European Danube Commission. In 1921, under the Treaty of Versailles, the Danube riverside countries and the European Danube Commission established the International Danube Commission, whose mission was to guarantee free navigation from Braila to Ulm, but it was dissolved in 1940. After World War II, East and West Germany fought over the management of the Danube, but in 1948 the Belgrade Agreement established a management committee of the riverside countries. → Related topics Austria | Chain Bridge | Black Sea | Germany | Danube Delta | Balaton [Lake] | Hungary | Bulgaria | Rhine [River] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
