A city in Bavaria in southeastern Germany. It is located halfway between Nuremberg and Munich, at the crossing point of the Danube. Its name appeared in 806, and it received city rights in 1250. Since 1392, it has been the residence of the Dukes of Bavaria-Ingolstadt. It was known as the location of the University of Bavaria from 1472 to 1800, and became a fortress city in the 19th century. The thick wall surrounding the old town still remains today. It is the junction of the Regensburg-Ulm and Nuremberg-Munich railway lines, and industries include automobiles, machinery, and textiles. In particular, pipelines from Genoa and Marseilles led to the development of oil refining and petrochemical industries. The old town has parts of the 14th century city walls, city gates, a 15th century temple, and a museum on the ruins of a castle. Population: 124,387 (2010).
