… The critical angle method measures the critical angle of total internal reflection to determine the refractive index of transparent or absorbing solids (including crystals) and liquids. Figure 2 shows an immersion refractometer, which is one of the critical angle methods, in which a 30° prism is immersed in the liquid to be measured, which has a refractive index n ₂ smaller than the refractive index n ₁ of the prism. When a reflecting mirror is used to illuminate the inclined surface of the prism as shown in the figure, the light is refracted inside the prism in directions where the angle α is greater than the critical angle of total internal reflection, i.e., α = sin ^-1 ( n ₂ / n ₁ ), and a part of the field of view is observed as dark through a telescope, which is a combination of an objective lens and an eyepiece. …
