A port city in the Sakhalin region of Russia. It is located on the west coast of the central-southern part of Sakhalin Island, overlooking the Tatar Strait. There is a pulp and paper complex and coalfields nearby. It was formerly a Japanese territory, and its Japanese name was Esutori. It has a population of about 20,000.
