The country is divided into a narrow western region of mountains and valleys and a broad eastern plateau that slopes gently to the east. In the northwest, the Ansariya Mountains (Jibāl al‐'Arawīyina) run north to south, and its western flank gently descends to the sea, leaving a narrow coastal plain. The eastern side of this range forms a steep slope, bordering the gently meandering Orontes River, with its flat-bottomed valleys and curvilinear swampy depressions. …
