This refers to high-quality silver that was exported in large quantities from Japan to England and the Netherlands in the early 17th century. This silver was cupellated silver and minted silver. The origin of the word soma is said to be from Sama, the name for the Iwami Ginzan silver mine region. This silver was, so to speak, local silver, and the Edo Shogunate established the Ginza in 1601 (Keicho 6), collected local silver, issued chogin and mameban silver (80% silver content) as currency, and tried to switch to this for export silver as well. However, exports of local silver continued, and they constituted the majority of exports until around 1621 (Genna 7). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
