This genus, named in honor of the Greek physician Hippocrates, forms the Hippocrataceae family, which is closely related to the Celastraceae family. Most are woody vines, with over 100 species distributed in tropical regions. The leaves are simple and opposite or alternate. The ovary is superior and three-lobed. The seeds of some species, such as Hippocratea comosa Sw. (illustration), found in Western India , are said to be fatty and sweet and edible, but are not important. The Hippocrataceae family is a small group consisting of three genera and about 150 species, but is widely distributed from the tropics to the subtropics.
