An ancient Greek physician. Born on the island of Kos in the Aegean Sea. He built the foundations of medicine as an empirical science based on observation and practical experience, and also emphasized the ethics of physicians, and is known as the "father of medicine." He advocated the humoral theory, which states that disease occurs when there is an imbalance in the mixture of four types of humors. However, the Hippocratic Corpus, which bears his name, is said to be a compilation of the theories of many physicians in Alexandria in the 3rd century BC.

古代ギリシアの医学者。エーゲ海のコス島の生れ。観察と実際の経験をもとにして経験科学としての医学の基礎を築き，また医師の倫理を強調し，〈医学の父〉と呼ばれる。病気は４種類の体液の混合に変調が生じたときに起こるという体液説を唱えた。ただし彼の名を冠する《ヒッポクラテス集典》は，前３世紀にアレクサンドリアで多くの医家の説をまとめたものとされている。
