Magnetic compasses utilize the fact that a magnetized needle indicates the direction of the earth's magnetic field, i.e., the direction of the magnetic meridian. They were developed as navigational instruments from the latter half of the 13th century, and underwent revolutionary improvements in the 18th and 19th centuries, resulting in the appearance of the current form of compass. Based on their structure, they are classified into dry and liquid types, but recently compasses using magnetic detection sensors have also been devised. …
