[Died] June 18, 1939. Boston. An Indian-born British electrical engineer who later became a naturalized American. After working as an electrical engineer in London on projects such as laying undersea electric cables, he moved to the United States at the age of 26 and became an assistant to Thomas Edison (1887), and later became a professor at Harvard University. He applied complex number theory to AC circuit analysis, contributing to the development of electrical science, and in 1902, independently of O. Heaviside, discovered that the ionosphere above the atmosphere reflects electromagnetic waves.

インド生れのイギリス人で後にアメリカに帰化した電気技師。ロンドンで電気技師として海底電線布設事業などに従事したのち，26歳のときアメリカに渡り，エジソンの助手となり (1887) ，その後ハーバード大学教授。交流回路分析に複素数理論を応用し，電気学の発展に貢献したほか，1902年に大気上空中の電離層が電磁波を反射することを O.ヘビサイドとは独立して発見した。
