A city facing the Pacific Ocean in northeastern Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1939. The city center developed along with Hitachi Mine and Hitachi, Ltd., and is along National Route 6, the Joban Line, and the Joban Expressway. Hitachi Mine, discovered during the Tensho era, was originally called Akazawa Copper Mine. It developed rapidly after being purchased by Fusanosuke Kuhara in 1905 and becoming Hitachi Mine. With the establishment of Hitachi in 1920, it became one of Japan's leading mining and manufacturing cities. With the concentration of Hitachi's large factories producing electrical appliances, industrial machinery, and many other subcontracted factories, the city's manufacturing shipments reached 1.124 trillion yen (2003), and it grew into the largest industrial city in northern Kanto. In 1959, Hitachi Port was built at the mouth of the Kuji River, and it functions as a commercial port and a base for importing foreign materials. After trade liberalization in the 1960s, Hitachi Mine downsized and mining ceased in 1981. The Hitachi Furyumono is open to the public during the Kamine Shrine festival from May 3rd to 5th. In November 2004, the city was incorporated with Juoh Town in Taga County. The city sustained damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 225.74 km2 . Population: 193,129 (2010). →Related topics Corporate towns Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
