1866‐1900 A Norwegian fin de siècle poet. He lived in America (1890-91) as an engineer, but was unable to adapt to the mechanical civilization of society. His Poems (1893) is a good example of unrhymed prose poetry that expresses the eternal truth and mystery of the world with the purity of an extraordinary sensibility. His yearning for feminine mystery and love is depicted in Life, the first of Two Short Stories (1895), and The Cross (1896). His posthumously published Diary of a Pastor (1920) reveals his talent as a melancholic poet plagued by existential anxiety. He is said to be the model for Rilke's The Notebooks of Malte.
