A Norwegian fin de siècle poet. He lived in America (1890-91) as an engineer, but was unable to adapt to the mechanical civilization of society. His Poems (1893) is a good example of unrhymed prose poetry that expresses the eternal truth and mystery of the world with the purity of an extraordinary sensibility. His yearning for feminine mystery and love is depicted in Life, the first of Two Short Stories (1895), and The Cross (1896). His posthumously published Diary of a Pastor (1920) reveals his talent as a melancholic poet plagued by existential anxiety. He is said to be the model for Rilke's The Notebooks of Malte.

ノルウェーの世紀末詩人。技師としてアメリカに住む(1890‐91)が，機械文明社会になじまなかった。《詩集》(1893)は無韻の散文詩が世界の永遠の真実，神秘を異常な感性の清らかさで表現した好例である。女性の神秘と愛への憧憬は，《二つの短編》(1895)の第1作〈生命〉や《十字架》(1896)に描かれた。死後に出版された《ある牧師の日記》(1920)は実存的不安に悩む憂愁詩人の本領をあらわす。彼はリルケの《マルテの手記》のモデルとされる。
