A former town in Gunma County, central Gunma Prefecture. Located at the southeastern foot of Mount Haruna, the town center of Kaneko developed as a post station on the Mikuni Kaido road during the Edo period. The town produces rice and wheat, and also raises silkworms and livestock. Bordering Maebashi and Takasaki, the town is becoming increasingly commercial and industrial. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Takasaki City along with Gunma County's Minago Town and Kurabuchi Village, and Tano County's Shinmachi Town. 21.94 km2 . Population 35,767 (2003). 群馬県中部,群馬郡の旧町。榛名(はるな)山南東麓にあり,中心市街の金古(かねこ)は江戸時代,三国(みくに)街道の宿駅として発達。米,麦を産し,養蚕,畜産も行う。前橋・高崎両市に接し,商工業化が進む。2006年1月群馬郡箕郷町,倉渕村,多野郡新町町と高崎市へ編入。21.94km2。3万5767人(2003)。
