A German adventurer and merchant. He used Shanghai as a base to visit Korea twice (1866) to trade, but was rejected. On his third visit (1868), he tried to dig up the tomb of Nam Yeon Gun Gyu, Daewongun's real father (Gaya-dong, Deoksan-gun, South Chungcheong Province), but failed. In this attempt, he received cooperation from Korean Christians who were dissatisfied with Daewongun's oppression of Catholicism. However, the act of digging up the tomb as a means of forcing trade deepened the view among the Korean government and private sector that Westerners were immoral beasts, and resulted in strengthening the Daewongun government's isolationist and expulsion of foreigners policy.

ドイツの冒険商人。上海を基地に朝鮮に2回(1866)交易を求めて拒否され，3回目(1868)に，大院君の実父である南延君球の墓(忠清南道徳山郡伽耶洞)をあばこうと試みて失敗した。これには，大院君の天主教弾圧に不満を抱く朝鮮人教徒の協力があった。しかし，交易強要の手段として墓をあばくという行為は，朝鮮の朝野に欧米人は人倫を欠いた禽獣であるという観念を深めさせ，大院君政権の鎖国攘夷政策を強めさせる結果となった。
