Asashina [village] - Asashina

Japanese: 浅科[村] - あさしな

A village in Kitasaku District, central eastern Nagano Prefecture. Population 6,473 (1995). Located in the Saku Plain, the Chikuma River flows north through the eastern part of the village, and the village borders Komoro City to the north. The village includes part of the ancient Mochizuki Maki, and place names related to pastures such as Mimayose and Komayose remain in Mimakigahara. Cultivation of the land progressed with the construction of Gorobei Weir by Ichikawa Gorobei during the Kan'ei era (1624-1644), and rice paddies spread from the center to the east of the village. The central settlement, Yahata, and Shionada on the east bank of the Chikuma River were post stations on the Nakasendo road in the early modern period, and Shionada and Mimayose on the west bank of the Chikuma River were ferry docks on the Chikuma River, making the village an important transportation hub.

長野県中東部，北佐久郡の村。人口6473(1995)。佐久平に位置し，村の東部を千曲川が北流し，北は小諸市に接する。古代の官牧望月牧の一部を含み，御牧原（みまきがはら）には御馬寄（みまよせ），駒寄など牧に関連する地名が今に残る。寛永年間(1624‐44)に市川五郎兵衛が開削した五郎兵衛堰によって耕地化が進み，村の中央から東部には水田地帯が広がる。中心集落八幡は千曲川東岸の塩名田とともに近世は中山道の宿駅で，塩名田と千曲川西岸の御馬寄には千曲川の渡船場があり，交通の要衝であった。
