It is an island located at the southernmost tip of the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland, UK. It is 40km long, 31km wide, and has an area of 606km2. It has a population of about 3,900 (1973). As it is generally low-lying and the coastline is winding, the main industries are agriculture, sheep farming, and fishing, but whisky brewing and marble and slate quarrying are also carried out. Administratively, it belongs to the county of Strathclyde (formerly the county of Argyll), and the main settlement is Port Ellen.
