The textile industry has been developed in the western Owari region, centered on Bisai, Ichinomiya, and Tsushima in Aichi Prefecture, since ancient times, and this refers to textiles produced in this region. In 1764 (Meiwa 1), the technique for weaving Santomejima (Santome stripes) was introduced to Okoshi village, Nakajima county (Okoshi town, Bisai city) from Nishijin, Kyoto, and 20 years later, the technique for Sugadaijin stripes was introduced from Kyoto. In 1829 (Bunsei 12), a merchant from Kanazawa, Kaga, commented that "Oshu Santomejima is a fashionable item in many countries," and it became a local specialty. Furthermore, at the end of the Bunsei era, Yuki stripes, a silk-cotton woven fabric, were produced, and it was a central product from 1830 (Tenpo 1) until the beginning of the Meiji era.
