French poet. Born into a Reformed (Calvinist) aristocratic family, he received a humanistic education from an early age. Influenced by his father, he was an ardent Protestant, and at the age of 16 he participated in the Wars of Religion and served as a close aide to Henry of Navarre (later King Henry IV), the political leader of the French Reformation. Dissatisfied with Henry IV's conversion to Catholicism, he left the court and fled to Geneva in 1620, where he would end his eventful life. He was deeply devoted to Ronsard, and under his influence he wrote Le Printemps (c. 1570-73), a collection of love poems dedicated to Diane Salviati (the niece of Cassandre, whose work Ronsard sang about). His long poem Les Tragiques (1616), written between 1577 and the wars, is an epic poem of the French Reformation, and is a masterpiece of Baroque poetry, depicting all of the passions and dreams of the passionate warrior, such as his grief and indignation at the war, his hatred for the Catholics, and his confidence in the final victory of the Protestants, in a passionate tone and with vivid colored images appropriate for an age of anxiety. His other works include L'Histoire universelle (A History of the World), a chronicle of the progress of the Reformation, his autobiography Sa vie à ses enfants (An Account to the Children), and the eccentric prose satire Les Aventures du baron de Foeneste (The Adventures of Baron Feneste).
