…As part of the International Earth's Interior Project (UMP) in the 1950s, the Mohole Project was taken up, which attempted to penetrate the Mohorovičić discontinuity (commonly known as the Moho) to reach the mantle, and preliminary experiments were conducted, but it was discontinued without success. Learning from the failure of the Mohole Project, the DSDP abandoned the intention of penetrating the Moho, but instead attempted to study deep-sea sediments and the upper crust by drilling shallower. It was initially jointly planned by several oceanographic institutes in the United States, and was launched in 1968 under the name of JOIDES (Joint Oceanographic Institutions Deep Earth Sampling Program). The Glomar Challenger (11,000 tons) has been used as the drilling ship. …

…1950年代の国際地球内部開発計画(UMP)の一環としてモホロビチッチ不連続面(通称モホ面)を貫いてマントルまで達しようとしたモホール計画が取り上げられ，予備的な実験が行われたが，成功を見ずに中断された。DSDPでは，モホール計画の失敗を教訓として，モホ面まで貫くという意図はあきらめたが，もっと浅い掘削によって深海堆積物や地殻上部を研究しようというもので，当初はアメリカの数個の海洋研究所が合同･立案し，JOIDES（ジヨイデス）(Joint Oceanographic Institutions Deep Earth Sampling Program)の名のもとに1968年開始された。掘削船としてはグロマー･チャレンジャー号Glomar Challenger(1万1000トン)が使用されてきた。…
