Alonso de Zorita

Spanish lawyer and colonial judicial officer. Studied at the University of Salamanca. In 1548 he was assigned to the New World territories, where he served as audiencia judge in various regions. During his tenure in Mexico from 1556 to 1566 he collected materials and wrote Concise Report on the Princes of New Spain (1891). This is a first-class historical source on the Aztec government system, tax system, social stratification, land ownership, etc., immediately prior to the conquest, and includes testimony on the changes that occurred under Spanish rule.
