This is a hound that originated in England and is specialized for hunting rabbits (illustration). Its origins are unknown, but it is said to have originated from a small pure white hound that was beloved by the Welsh royal family in the 6th century. During the reigns of Henry III and Queen Elizabeth I, it is said that the beagle was carried to hunting fields in a horse's saddlebag, where 10 to 20 were let loose to surround and drive away rabbits. The beagle as we know it today was established in the 19th century, and is nicknamed the "singing beagle" because of its loud howl that it makes when chasing rabbits in the field.
