A general term for apes that lived in geological times and remain as fossils. Taxonomically, fossil apes are classified as part of the Pongidae family of apes, along with the extant great apes gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans, and are grouped together with the Gibbons and Hominidae families in the superfamily Hominoidea. Based on fossils known to date, it appears that the gibbon lineage of Pliopithecinae and the ape lineage had already diverged around the Middle Oligocene (about 30 million years ago).
